Black branches
finger the winter sky,
white clouds piled
each on each
like snowdrifts
on a mountainside.
Avalanches threaten
the road riveting
between the forest
stretched across,
seeking to recover
the uncut past
when leaf touched leaf
and roots sought
subterranean merge
across dark secrets
of the sacred soil.
We journey on that road,
passing like strangers
for the moment
in this evanescent

the woods will reclaim,
the family of trees
will link again,
above and below
the mystery of earth.
